Changing ECE Account Passwords

Changing or resetting your password for your ECE accounts

ECE password change/reset tools are now online: http://changepass.its.cit.cmu.edu/.

Traditional password changing methods via Linux and Windows workstations in the department are now disabled, all password changes must now be performed throughout the ECE Change/Reset Password web form. Once you complete this password change process your ECE Linux and Windows passwords will be synchronized (the same).

When you initially access the ECE Change/Reset Password website may see the following screen if you are not currently logged into any WebISO related service.

There are three scenarios by which you can change or reset your password with the new web system:

  1. I know my ECE password and I would like to change it and synchronize my ECE Unix/Linux and Windows passwords.

If you know your ECE Linux/Unix/Email/AFS login and password enter that information in the dialog box. Make sure the domain pull down is set to ECE.CMU.EDU on theWebISO login page as shown below.

Once logged in the form below will be displayed. Enter your current ECE password in the Old Password box. The new password requirements are shown to the right of the password fields. When each requirement is met by your new password, the requirement will turn green. When all the requirements are green, you must retype the password in the second box. If the passwords match, a checkmark will be displayed next to both password boxes. If they don’t match, there will be an X next to the second box. Should you not want to come up with a password on your own, you can use the password generator on the right. Click the button to generate a random password. If for some reason you don’t like that password, you can continue to click until one is generated that is acceptable to you. Click the paste button to paste the generated password into both new password boxes on the form. Once the form is completed your password will be changed and synchronized in 10 minutes. Using your ECE account is the most effective way to perform a password change in the ECE domain.

  1. I know my Andrew password and I would like to use it to reset and synchronize my ECE Unix/Linux and Windows passwords.

If you DO NOT know your ECE Linux/Unix/Email/AFS password then proceed to use your Andrew login and password. Make sure the domain pull down is set to ANDREW.CMU.EDU on the WebISO login page as shown below.

If ECE has an Andrew account equivalency on file for you, a password reset will be performed once you complete the form shown below. The new password requirements are shown to the right of the password fields. When each requirement is met by your new password, the requirement will turn green. When all the requirements are green, you must retype the password in the second box. If the passwords match a checkmark will be displayed next to both password boxes. If they don’t match, there will be an X next to the second box. Should you not want to come up with a password on your own you can use the password generator on the right. Click the button to generate a random password. If for some reason you don’t like that password, you can continue to click until one is generated that is acceptable to you. Click the paste button to  paste the generated password into both new password boxes on the form.

If an andrew account equivalency does not exist, additional information will be required on the form as shown here and a password reset will be processed after you account has been manually verified by ECE ITS staff.

  1. I do not know either my ECE or Andrew passwords.

If you do not know either your Andrew or ECE account, you will need to visit the ECE Help Desk in HH-A204 and present your CMU ID Card to have your ECE password reset by ECE ITS staff. You may also choose to visit the Andrew Computing Services password page to reset your Andrew password. After resetting your Andrew password, you can proceed to request an ECE password change online with option 2, above: 2)I know my Andrew password…
