Preparing Computing Systems for Moving

Disconnect computing system components on the previous business day or the day of a planned relocation, whichever is suitable to your facilities coordinator.  Computing systems must be gathered and placed in a common area of the office being vacated. If a moving company is providing relocation services, consult their service descriptions for a full explanation of your responsibilities and exclusions. For example, a popular moving company for CMU, Maroadi Transfer and Storage, states in their agreement guide

• ... the night before your move ... unhook your computer and pack the cables, mouse and keyboard. ... please do this prior to the mover’s arrival and place all misc. cables, mouse and keyboard items in the waste can and label with final destination. Please label the monitor and the hard drive.
• The movers are not allowed to unplug any equipment. This includes printers, fax machines, copiers, etc. The movers may relocate these items, but they must be unplugged, prepared, and labeled prior to the relocation.
• Phones are not relocated by the Movers.

Preparing a New Location

Determine if network outlets must be activated or reconfigured to receive the new computing equipment. Other areas of assessment will include power, network and peripheral cabling, and air flow.  If additional equipment is needed to accommodate computer systems in the new location, ITS will provide recommendations.  In the event that items must be purchased, customers are responsible for supplying an Oracle String to procure the items.

Moving Assistance

A facilities coordinator or a campus supplier is recommended to conduct the physical move. For cross-building relocations, as well as relocations involving a large number of staff, utilizing professional movers is required.  For small or nearby relocations, facilities coordinators will move the computing equipment.

Reconnecting Computing Systems

After the affected computing systems arrive in the new location, ITS will reconnect devices in the same configuration as they were previously unless the customer requests a change.

Verifying Operation

Before closing a relocation request, ITS will verify the proper operation of computing systems in the new location.  Customers are encouraged to contact ITS if any problems arise.
