End of Legacy (TiBS) Client Side Backups

End of Legacy (TiBS) Client Side Backups

CMU Box and CMU Google Workspace have been available to members of the CMU community for several years, offering convenient, accessible, user-friendly storage. They are also the recommended storage solutions for general work product by Carnegie Mellon University for its affiliates. ECE staff and faculty have had the ability to use Crashplan for client-side backups on an opt-in basis since 2019.

As a result of these developments the installation of our legacy backup solution TiBS on client systems generally ended in 2020. The main consideration behind terminating this practice was the wide availability of the friendlier, cheaper options previously mentioned. Clients which had active backups on TiBS were allowed to continue until the client hardware was removed from service. More recently, the primary developer of TiBS has stopped offering ongoing software support, effectively making the product end of life.

With these changes in mind, ECE will stop offering TiBS backups on client systems as of Mar 1, 2025.

All ECE affiliates should make use of CMU Box or CMU Google Workspace to reduce the risk of lost data.

In addition, ECE staff and faculty may take advantage of our Crashplan offering for client-side data backups.

Please continue to follow CMU Data Classification and Acceptable Storage policies with your data.
